Visiting Mike

Friday, May, 9 2014

I admit, I feel a bit uncomfortable writing about a writer.

Having for some time now fashioned myself as a bit of a word butcher, I get the sense that I'm kidding myself when I think I could do what, oh I don't know, an actual writer on the NY Times Best-Seller list does!

But here it is, my feeble attempt at writing about a writer named Michael Perry.

Words like "down home" style would probably be used to describe his books, although my guess is Mike himself wouldn't go for that whole stereotype thing.

This is his latest effort.

I'm not a reader, but I enjoyed every word of "Visiting Tom".
Maybe that's because I could have written it about my late neighbor at the lake house and just called the book "Visiting Eddie" instead.

To this day I can still hear Eddie's voice explaining to me how to use what he called a 'convincer', a large pipe placed over a wrench to add force when attempting to loosen a rusty nut.

There are a lot of Toms and Eddies out there, and for that I am grateful.

Ironically, for a guy who writes so much about everyday family life, I suspect Michael Perry gets no where near the amount of time he would like with his family here in Wisconsin.

These days he is either on a book tour, doing live radio show appearances or playing with his band called the Longbeds.

His traveling road show stops in Appleton on Friday, May 16 at the PAC. CLICK HERE for more info.

If he can squeeze me in, Michael will be on the PhilCast (his second time now, earning him the title of 'Friend of the PhilCast') at 3:45-ish today, Friday, May 9.

If you miss it, catch the podcast of the segment at thephilcast.com

Now I better use spell check....he's an author for cryin' eye ay.

Sludge-belching beast

Wednesday, May, 7 2014

It's almost so bad you can smell it through your screen.

PhilCast listener Patrick posted a video after hearing me talk Tuesday on the show about this stinky run-in I had with some sort of sludge-belching beast while on my bike ride through the countryside.

What's in the video is exactly what I saw...and SMELLED on the ride. You nailed it Patrick.

A manure transfer huh?
He should know...he says he works on a farm and that the company that built and runs that transfer system is from Chilton.

I think I can still smell it in my nose today.

Bins or seatbacks?

Tuesday, May, 6 2014

I've got a great list of dueling pet peeves to talk about on the Tuesday PhilCast.

10 pairs of pet peeves, asking the question, which one bothers you more?

For example;
Which one is a bigger pet peeve, people who abuse the overhead bins or people who put their seats all the way back?

Airing out some pet peeves on the Tuesday show with you at 3:00.

Also two stories with the same theme....a dying breed.
In this case, newspapers and hotel mini bars.

Join the conversation, won't you?!

Smart gun/dumb law?

Monday, May, 5 2014

On the Monday PhilCast;

Pro-gun extremists have threatened to kill a gun shop owner if he goes ahead with a plan to sell 'smart guns' at his store.

Smart guns can only be fired if the actual owner is wearing an accompanying watch that allows only the owner to fire the weapon.

The gun shop owner says they're hypocrites because the pro-gunners are doing the very same thing they preach against-trying to ban the sale of a gun.

We'll discuss.

Is really taking away a right to own and bear arms if it's a smart gun?
