The Assignment Fox Cities on Outagamie county's veterans' court program is
now posted on our website:  whby.com.   You'll find it under Audio Vault.
Hear the story of the program's first graduate, what the program offers veterans
who use it, and a judge's thoughts on how the program benefits those who
commit to the program.
By-the-way, each veteran has a mentor during his/her year-long journey
in the program and additional mentors are needed.

The Outagamie County veterans' court program graduated its first candidate on Friday, August 9th.
Alexander Feest fulfilled his year-long contract in the judicial system, meeting benchmarks set
by the court when he entered the program.
Under provisions of the veterans' court program, members of the military who are arrested for
breaking laws get a chance to opt for the program.   When their year-long journey in veterans' court
is successfully-completed, the charge is dismissed.
Two Outagamie county judges preside over the court.  They are John Des Jardins and
Greg Gill Jr.    Judge Gill says Feest is a role model for others to emulate.
The veterans' court, how the system works, and its first graduate are the subject of an Assignment
Fox Cities, appearing soon on the WHBY website.

As a reporter you are trained to leave your emotions at home when you set-out
to cover a story.  It makes professional sense.   I did that Wednesday morning as I
left to cover havoc wreaked by a powerful storm.  Later we learned the storm packed
winds of 90 to 100 miles an hour and spawned several lower-grade tornadoes.
One of the stories kept on coming back to me.   It was about a mother of two
young children whose second-floor apartment in Kaukauna lost a roof, leaving
them exposed to the elements of torrential rain and high winds.
She recalled laying on top of her daughters, protecting them, as debris was
swirling around before she fled to a lower level, seeking safety from the storm.   At
one point in the interview, the mother told me she lost everything.  In her words,
"I didn't have much, but I lost everything."
My emotions were in check, but a sense of compassion came over me as I
drove away to another location and another story.

The Assignment Fox Cities on the Seymour Community Museum and General Store had
to be rescheduled.  You can now hear it Wednesday, August 7th, at 6:45 a.m., 12:45 p.m.
and 5:45 p.m.   It was a fun piece to do.  It's a fun piece to listen to.   Plan to spend some
time there when you attend Seymour's annual "home of the hamburger" Friday and
Saturday, August 9th and 10th.

Outagamie county officials are developing a program to aid judges in making decisions
about children who are abused or neglected.  The program is called Court-Appointed
Special Advocates, or CASA.   Under the program CASA would function as a Guardian
Ad Litem, but as a volunteer lay person.   You'll find the story online at whby.com, under
Audio Vault.  Judge John Des Jardins hopes the program can be up-and-running by 2014.
