Pedal to the grave

Happy Monday.

The countdown to Memorial Weekend, the Indy 500 and the start of summer is on!

Today on the PhilCast I'll have a few stories from my weekend that include some bike riding. And speaking of that, I'll also have the story of a guy now providing a trip to your final resting place via BIKE!

Here it is, the bike hearse...

Yes, now for the person who was really into riding you can get a ride to the grave in this getup.

The guy has a waiting list for the service by the way.

More during the show....

Somebody give them some Ex-Lax and lets get this thing flowing and done already.

AGAIN, the proposed bike lane project for Mason Street has been shoved aside and sent back to committee without a vote.

How much more can be debated about this?

Someone comes up with an alternative and someone else gripes about it.

Just take a vote and move on. You're never going to please everyone. Someone is going to be disappointed when a decision is made. But that's part of being a politician. You can't make 'em all happy, but at least do your job. We've heard all the arguments.

One way or the other....but come on already. Vote.

A few thoughts from these past few days while on my vacation. And no, I won't show slides.

The beach and 80 degrees is a wonderful thing, especially when it's in the 40's back here. I did bring back some warm weather, though....

Paid 3.19 a gallon for gas where we were...saw 3.74 per gallon upon return. Yuck!

There's a ton of construction going on in Milwaukee, too. They enjoy orange barrels almost as much as we do.

Shucking oysters is not as easy as it appears! Especially when the ones I was shucking were as big as your fist! Good eating, though...with tabasco and a squeeze of lemon!

You can tan too much! Saw a lady who would have given "Tan Mom" a run for her money. Her skin was so dark and....leathery!

Ya gotta wonder some times about why in the world people are paid to do studies about the obvious.

Where does this money to waste time doing this come from?

And why in the world do we need a study to tell us this brilliant headline I saw today and will talk more about on the PhilCast?

"Death most likely in smaller, lighter vehicle in a two-vehicle crash"

Wow.

A second-grade student in Milwaukee wrote a note to the vice president suggesting people use chocolate bullets so no one would get hurt when they are shot.

Joe Biden sent back a hand-written note to young Myles for the effort.

Kinda cool.

Chocolate bullets. Amazing how a kid's mind works. If only it were that simple.

Happy Anniversary

Well I won't lie, it seems odd to be here in Wisconsin on a cold, dank day working rather than walking the beach looking for seashells on Sanibel Island on this date.

20 years ago today Sandy and I were married on the island, and for almost all of the years to follow we have vacationed there on this very week to mark the occasion. Due to scheduling conflicts we'll be returning there in September rather than May.

Back then there was no digital camera or fancy cell phone to take pictures with, so earlier today I snapped a photo of a framed wedding picture to share digitally on line.

I'm not sure how the heck 20 years have passed so quickly. All I know is that it has been a damned good 20 years.

Am I boring you yet?

OK, onward to something about the PhilCast, since I AM, after all, WORKING today...

I'm bringing back "Chadoin' This Weekend" as of today, but with a twist this year.

On Fridays after the 4:30 news when we do the segment, the newest member of the PhilCast 'regulars' will join us, starting today.

Not only will we talk about our plans for the weekend, but Mary Hirvela of the Fox Cities Convention & Visitors Bureau will be on with us each week to chat up some of the events taking place around the Fox Cities.

Maybe you'll get an idea of something to do. Maybe you'll want to plug an event taking place. Maybe you just have some exciting plans to share with us. It's basically an exchange of ideas and information about what's up for the upcoming weekend.

So, "Chadoin' This Weekend?"

Feel free to call in during the segment, or email me details ahead of time.

281-1150 or toll-free 1-886-887-1150

I'll miss Miss America

You know I loves me my beauty pageants. Watching the Miss America pageant has been a tradition in our house for years.

Miss America is all about tradition, including that song right after she is crowned....

..."There she is....Miss America..."

Nope. Not this year. Come September there will be no Miss America song sung. In its place, well, they don't know yet. All they know is that lawyers have gotten involved. You see there's a licensing issue and federal lawsuit involving the original writer's widow.

So legal issues will take away a tradition dating back to Bert Parks. It's a shame. Maybe they'll replace the song with a new and fresh hip-hop version. I can't wait to hear it. NOT.

The governor of New Jersey squished it in front of some school kids touring his office.

Big deal.

PETA is trying to make it a big deal anyway....sort of....complaining now that the gov should have captured and released the spider to set an example for the kids.

I repeat: It's a spider.

Derby time and if I'm right about this, a horse name 'Orb' is the favorite.

Me?

I'm not into horse racing.

I'm not into gambling.

I don't drink mint juleps.

But I DO have the info about the horses and one heck of an expensive mint julep to share with you on the Friday PhilCast.

Oh, and I guess it's not really the Kentucky Derby any more either.

I think it's the 'Grade I Kentucky Derby, Presented by Yum! Brands' that will be run Saturday.

I wonder how the Indy 500 has managed to remain just the Indy 500 at this point?!

It's billed as a .22 rifle for kids.

In this case, someone gave a rifle to a kid in Kentucky, a kid that is only five years old.

He accidentally shot his two-year-old sister dead.

The Cricket. They've even given it a name.

Is it just me?

This is insane. Five years old. If you want your son to have a gun at five, how about giving him a toy gun instead of a real one that can kill?

Really? A rifle with a cute name to a five-year-old? And now his baby sister is dead. How's that all working out for the family now?

More during the Thursday PhilCast.

Goodbye "Old Blue"

Well, I guess I knew this day might come on my watch.

Today, Wednesday May 1st, I say goodbye to a bit of a PhilCast legend, a furnace that's so old it sort of became a part of the history of the show.

It even has a name.

And as of today we say so long to "Old Blue" the furnace that kept me company for two years of recording the PhilCast show in what was at the time my basement "Man Cave" studio.

Listeners learned of Old Blue at the time when, on very cold winter days, I would have to at least keep a little heat on in the house. Old Blue would kick in and I'd joke about it while recording the show.

From time to time there would be an issue with Old Blue, and I'd talk about that on the show as well. And each and every time if a repair guy came over he would say just about the same thing...

"Well, they don't build 'em like that anymore."

"Haven't seen one this old in a while."

"She'll run forever but it's not very efficient."

Nope, they don't build 'em like this anymore.

Take a look at the tag the original owner of our house slapped onto Old Blue;

 1970.

Old Blue has been running since 1970. Wow.

Nope, they don't make 'em like they used to, that's for sure.

And the thing is, she didn't die either! I'm putting her out to pasture.

Old Blue just needs a few hundred dollars in parts to keep going. But with a house that's for sale we decided to just go ahead and update at this time to avoid an 'old furnace' issue at the time of sale.

It's just time to say goodbye to the old and hello to the new.

So during the show from PhilCast South on Wednesday the crew will be installing a new furnace in my basement.

We even have a tribute song to play that has been sent in by Gold Club PC member Glenn in West Bend.

Give it a listen today after the Brewers' game on HBY.

So long Old Blue!

While raking my yard these past few days, I noticed a considerable amount of winter kill. It was a tough winter, and there were a few times when part of my yard was exposed to the bitter cold and the elements. I did see a nice bounce-back already after just one or two showers this week, so with some sun, rain and fertilizer, we should be in better shape.

Couldn't help but notice on Monday the weather chart that showed the start of this spring is one of the coldest on record, after one of the warmest last year. Talk about being on polar ends of the scale!

Ah yes, the time-honored tradition of young boys and their dads bonding over some T-ball out on the old diamond.

Did I forget to mention the shooting?

You read right. Shooting.

One of the stories I'll be talking about on the Friday PhilCast involves a T-ball game and a couple of dads who get into an argument about the game. (Isn't that bad enough right there? Really? An argument over your kid's little league T-ball?)

I'm not sure what the kids were doing while these two idiots were setting a great example in front of them. But at some point one of the dads pulls out a gun and starts shooting.

As Paul Harvey would say, the rest of the story on the PhilCast.

You hear so many stories about young people going down the wrong path in life. That's why I try to support organizations that help kids stay on the right path...organizations like the Makaroff Youth Ballet.

Here's the gang that was in-studio with me on the Wednesday show.

Left to right:

Mallory Garrison, Rebecca Fitton and the 'boss' Linda Drezdzon.

We talked about their upcoming spring concert event on the first weekend in May.

I admire the kids' dedication and told them so during our interview. They work hard and we should support their efforts when we can.

This week I had the opportunity to be given a complete tour of the dazzling Orthopedic & Sports Institute of the Fox Valley.

The facility is even more impressive inside than its beautiful outside. OSI is one of our newest partners at WHBY, and it was with great interest that I did the walk-through, checking out everything from the rehab areas to the patient rooms and operating areas that look more like a boutique hotel than a medical facility.

My great interest of course comes from the fact that shortly after Thanksgiving in 2000 I underwent total hip replacement surgery after an old tennis injury had robbed me of my active lifestyle. Now, after over 27,000 miles on a bike, that hip and I are going strong! But like any part, sooner or later it will wear out and I'll need a little refresher. I think when that time comes I'll be here.

Today at 3:30-ish we will visit with OSI's CEO who will have more info about a seminar they are holding there on Thursday evening. Aches. Pains. Replacements? Joint injury? Rehab. Whatever it is....get your life back the way you want it to be again. I never had a regret about my hip replacement.

Heck, come out to the seminar just to get a tour of this very impressive place.

Earth Day

It's Earth Day Monday, so I'll do my part by recycling some jokes at the start of the show today, right after a special Earth Day PhilCast open.

We'll also be talking about this evening's special run/walk event at Memorial Park in Appleton to honor Boston a week after the bombings at the marathon.

It seems like that happened a lifetime ago.
