Former Mile performer gets big Grammy nomination

A former Mile of Music artist has some pretty crazy company in a category for the Grammy Awards.

The nominees were released this week, and Sturgill Simpson is up for Album of the Year. The others in the category are all pop artists -- Adele, Beyonce, Justin Bieber, and Drake.

Simpson played at Houdini Plaza on the Saturday of Mile 2, in 2014. Festival co-founder Dave Willems says he was also in Appleton for a preview party, at what's now D2, in May of that year.

He says a lot of people had a chance to connect with Simpson, and keep up with him on social media. Willems believes people have a misperception that artists don't remember people or certain things, once they get bigger. But he thinks they have a greater appreciation of the folks that got them where they are, rather than anybody else.

Willems says they try to bring "up and coming" artists to the festival, so people get a chance to see them in a small venue or a city park.
