6 escape fire in duplex with no smoke detectors
2 0

Six people escaped a fire on Appleton's north side this morning.

Battalion Chief Joe Strauss says they're lucky to be alive, because there weren't any working smoke detectors inside.

He says they were called to a duplex in the 2400 block of N. Locust Street, around 6 a.m.

Strauss says fortunately, a woman was awake in a bedroom, and she smelled smoke. He says she got everyone out, including two children that are 22 and 11 months old.

Strauss says they don't think the duplex is a total loss, but there is significant damage.
