Appleton's WWI 'Doughboy' statue will be replaced

The World War I memorial on Appleton's south side will be removed tomorrow, and replaced with a bronze version in a few months.

The "Spirit of the American Doughboy" statue is in the median on S. Memorial Drive, near Calumet Street.

Alex Schultz of Sculpture Valley says years ago, the sculptor had to use less durable materials because of the cost. He says the statue is deteriorating.

Schultz says a company from Iowa will put together a mold of the statue, and re-cast it in bronze.

He says they're also going to make sure the rifle and bayonette are accurate. The statue was damaged in a crash, 31 years ago, when a driver fell asleep at the wheel.

Schultz says they'll hold a ceremony at 10 a.m. tomorrow, before they take down the statue.
