The chair of Freedom’s Police and Fire Commission doesn’t agree with the town board’s decision to dump its police department.
The town is going to contract with the Outagamie County Sheriff’s Department.
Dan Clearwater believes some board members had issues with the police chief. He doesn’t think money had anything to do with the change.
Clearwater says the town board blindsided commission members during a special meeting on the future of the department. He says the board never came to the commission and expressed any concerns or a need to change things. He says that’s what upsets him most. Instead, he says they just came to the commission with a proposal to disband the department.
Sheriff’s deputies already handle about 75 percent of the police calls in Freedom.
Clearwater is a former deputy, and he says he doesn’t have anything against the sheriff’s department.
