A divided state Supreme Court is blocking the extension of the governor’s “safer at home” order.
Majority Republicans in the Legislature sued Governor Evers, after he decided to keep the social distancing rules in place until May 26th.
Because the majority of justices didn’t go along with the request from GOP lawmakers to keep the order in place for six days, that means there are no social distancing rules in place in Wisconsin right now.
The Tavern League of Wisconsin is telling members they can open their bars immediately, and the organization is recommending they follow social distancing guidelines.
Four conservative justices voted to strike down the extension, while Conservative Justice Brian Hagedorn and the two liberal justices sided with Evers.
Republicans sued the governor, arguing the Legislature should be part of the discussions about how to handle the state’s response to coronavirus.
Evers declared a public health emergency on March 12th. GOP lawmakers argued that he couldn’t extend the “safer at home” for more than 60 days beyond that date.
