News » Possible convention center site raises concerns
Feb. 4, 2010 Officials are eyeing a parcel of land owned by Outagamie County as the site for a possible convention center in Appleton. Outagamie County deputy executive administrator Sherri McNamara says no one has formally approached the county about the former St. Joe's school site.
McNamara says the county recently spent over $2 million to purchase the land, tear down the school and create a much-needed parking lot. She says the loss of the property would also "hem in" the justice center, preventing any future expansion.
McNamara says the county must look out for the best interests of taxpayers, and many questions would need to be answered before the county would consider selling the property.
Consultants believe the former St. Joe's school site would be the best place to build a convention center. Appleton mayor Tim Hanna is creating a committee to examine the viability of the alternate sites.
McNamara says she expects the county will be formally approached if the committee also endorses the St. Joe's site. |
