News » Sheriff's captain reacts to drop in traffic deaths

Jan. 4, 2010
Traffic fatalities in 2009 were down across the state.

Cpt. Mike Jobe of the Outagamie County Sheriff's Department says there were 12 traffic deaths reported in 2009.  That's the same number as 2008, but it's down significantly from the early part of the decade.

Jobe says more people are buckling up, and that may be a factor.  He says luck might also be involved, because theoretically, a drunk driver could hit a tree and die, instead of hitting another car with several people in it. He says that could lead to a large number of fatalities, and increase the overall total.

Jobe says the numbers clearly show that the majority of fatal accidents happen in rural areas.  He says they usually involve speed and alcohol.
