News » Majority of H1N1 deaths involve other condition

Jan. 5, 2010
The first person in Appleton to die after getting the H1N1 virus did not have an underlying health condition.

While the state has seen otherwise healthy people die from the swine flu, many of them had some sort of underlying condition that contributed to the illness. That's according to Seth Boffeli, a spokesman for the state department of health services.

He says the tragedy in Appleton shows that anyone can be vulnerable, so people should get the H1N1 vaccine.

Appleton public health director Kurt Eggebrecht described the Appleton adult who died as an otherwise healthy person.

Since last April, when the state started tracking H1N1 related deaths, nearly 50 people have died.
