News » Appleton-based Guard unit returning home today

Jan. 20, 2010
Soldiers from an Appleton-based unit of the Wisconsin National Guard are returning to their homes today.

Lt. Col. Jackie Guthrie says members of the 2nd Battalion, 127th Infantry from companies in Appleton, Clintonville and Fond du Lac are done with the demobilization process at Fort McCoy.

She says they were on active duty for a year, and in Iraq for several months, but their commitment actually started two years ago when they were alerted that they might be activated.

The soldiers are members of the 32nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team and they arrived at Volk Field late last week. Since then, they've been at Fort McCoy to fill out paperwork and learn about the benefits they earned.

Guthrie says by the end of the month, the remaining troops in the 32nd Infantry should complete the demobilization process.
