News » GOP, Dems react to 'State of the State'

Jan. 27, 2010
Republicans and Democrats are weighing in on Governor Doyle's State of the State address.

Republican Sen. Mike Ellis of Neenah says it's hard to create jobs in Wisconsin when the last budget raised taxes on businesses by $1.2 billion. He says that's money that companies can use to hire workers, and those new taxes drove a dagger through the heart of the private sector.

Ellis says Doyle "misrepresented" himself when he claimed that he protected funding for K-12 education and tripled the amount of money that's available for financial aid for college students. Ellis says Doyle forced school boards to raise property taxes because of funding cuts in the last budget. And he says college tuition climbed by an average of nine percent every year during his first seven years in office.

Assembly Majority Leader Tom Nelson says Governor Doyle set the record straight on how new tax credits and incentives are helping companies retain and create jobs. The Kaukauna Democrat says part of the speech was a "real education for the naysayers" who don't think the state can get through the economic crisis.
