News » Appleton school board sets budget priorities
Jan. 29, 2010 Appleton school board members know what they would save from the budget chopping block, if possible.
The board met this morning to go over a list of potential cuts.
The district is dealing with a projected $2.4 million budget gap for next year. Don Hietpas is the chief financial officer, and he says $2.8 million worth of cuts are on the list, so the board should be able to save some items.
Hietpas says the board's top priorities are technology, classroom materials and K-12 teachers. He says there are eight of those teachers on the list.
The school board doesn't have to make a final decision on what to cut until the summer. Administrators do have to issue preliminary layoff notices to teachers by the middle of next month, but they can remove teachers off the list at any time.
The board set its priorities after holding three public hearings on the recommended cuts. |
