News » Higher cig tax not bringing in expected revenue
Feb. 1, 2010 The state's higher cigarette tax isn't generating as much money as expected.
After predicting that another big increase would have diminishing returns, Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance president Todd Berry can say, "I told you so."
Revenue from the cigarette tax is projected to be $92 million-less than expected this fiscal year.
Berry says with Wisconsin's tax now sixth highest in the country, smokers are turning to the black market, the Internet or crossing state lines for cheaper smokes. |
