News » DNR to issue more bear hunting permits
Feb. 3, 2010 The DNR is trying to thin the bear population by issuing more hunting permits.
Officials say there are about 22,000 bears in Wisconsin, and they hope to bring that down to 13,000 over the next few years. The DNR is issuing 8,900 permits for the September bear hunting season. That's up 22 percent from last year, and the agency hopes hunters kill about 5,200 of the animals.
Wildlife biologist Dick Nikolai says the bear population grew quickly in recent years, and they are trying to reduce it to a tolerable level. He says bear sightings are on the rise in many parts of Wisconsin.
Nikolai says Wisconsin's bear range is expanding. He says they had to respond to a bear sighting in the Fox Valley within the past week. |
