News » Coach Carter brings message to FVTC

Feb. 11, 2010
His story was turned into a Hollywood movie several years ago, and Coach Ken Carter told people at Fox Valley Technical College that being average isn't good enough.

About 10 years ago, the former high school basketball coach locked his team out of the gym because the grades of some team members were slipping.

Carter says his family was broke while he was growing up in Mississippi, but he didn't give up. He says he wrote down his goals when he was 10 years old, and he eventually realized them. He says people should visualize what they want to do and then go after their goals.

Carter was portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson in the 2005 movie Coach Carter.
