News » Shiocton could be affected by mascot bill

Feb. 26, 2010
A race based mascot proposal passed by the Assembly yesterday could affect a local school district.

Shiocton School District Administrator Chris VanderHyden says they've received complaints about their "Chiefs" mascot in the past.

Under the Assembly measure, one complaint would trigger an investigation by the state's school superintendent.  If the Superintendent found that the complaint has merit, the school would have a year to get rid of the mascot or face fines of up to $1,000 a day.  VanderHyden says they're prepared if someone files a complaint.

Similar proposal have been introduced over the past decade, but this is the first time one has moved forward.  The state Senate hasn't voted on it yet
