News » Senate passes BadgerCare Basic

Feb. 26, 2010
The state Senate yesterday passed a bare bones, basic health care plan for adults on the waiting list for the state's BadgerCare Core plan.

Alma Democrat Kathleen Vinehout joined Republicans in voting against BadgerCare Basic.  She says it's underfunded and provides mediocre coverage.

The program would cost enrollees $130 a month.  Neenah Republican Mike Ellis agreed with Vinehout that the plan sets up unreasonable expectations.

Elllis said that monthly premium will get enrollees "an aspirin and a cup of cough syrup."

The bill passed 17 to 16.  Senators approved an amendment requiring a state audit of the program after its first year.
