An area lawmaker says a measure that passed the state senate yesterday could be a first step to lower healthcare costs.
If Governor Doyle signs the healthcare transparency bill, doctors would have to tell patients the average cost of a procedure if they ask for it. Hospitals would also have to post the prices of their 75 most common procedures, and insurers would be required to give an estimate of out-of-pocket costs.
Green Bay Sen. Rob Cowles says he's been pushing for the rules for more than three years. He says it will help people know what they are paying for. He says costs could drop because patients could shop around.
Cowles hopes to eventually force hospitals and doctors to post the prices of all of their procedures. |
