News » Appleton police stop gang fight

Apr. 30, 2010
Police in Appleton were able to stop two gangs from getting into a fight in a city park.

Sgt. Pat DeWall says authorities received an anonymous tip that the groups were getting together at Memorial Park Wednesday night around 6:30 p.m.

DeWall says officers got there before the fight started and they found a number of weapons in a vehicle. He says those weapons included samurai-style swords, large machetes, hatchets, a hammer, two pellet guns and a loaded handgun.

DeWall says without the anonymous tip, there potentially could have been a tragedy.

DeWall says police gangs are a growing issue in the area. He says in the last six months to a year, police have seen an increase in gang activity and gang identifications. He says they're most concerned that they're finding that more gang members are carrying weapons.

Police arrested an 18-year-old Menasha man on a charge of carrying a concealed weapon and their investigation is on-going.
