News » Appleton board signs off on new teachers

Aug. 31, 2010
More teachers are officially in place for the start of the new school year in Appleton.

The school board approved the hiring of eight new teachers, using some of the money from a federal bill aimed at preserving jobs in education.

Don Hietpas is the district's chief financial officer, and he says they hope to eventually add 14 teachers. He says most of the rest will be at the secondary level, and they should be on board by tomorrow or shortly after that.

The district is receiving nearly $3.2 million over the next three years to fund teaching positions. Even with the money, the district will still have fewer teachers than last year.

Four of the 14 teachers are coming off of the district's layoff list, but Hieptas says they will only continue to work part-time.
