News » Freshmen at St. Mary's Central get laptops

Aug. 31, 2010
The first school in northeast Wisconsin to implement a laptop program for its students is taking a big step forward with its plans.

St. Mary's Central high school in the town of Menasha issued individual laptops to freshmen yesterday during orientation.

Patrick Batey is the principal at the Catholic school. He says because they're trying to ease into the transition, sophomores and juniors will get their own laptops at the start of the second semester. He says this year's graduating seniors will continue to use school computers.

Administrators have been working on the plans for some time, and teachers got their own laptops last year to get ready for the transition.

Students will lease the laptops from the school for a fee that's added to their tuition. At the end of their four years in school, they can buy them for one dollar.
