News » For many, jobless benefits might run out in spring

Feb. 5, 2010
More than 100,000 unemployed Wisconsinites are getting a heads up from the department of workforce development.

Spokesman John Dipko many will lose their benefits this spring. He says the current limit is 93 weeks of unemployment benefits.

Several Democratic lawmakers want to extend the benefits through the end of the year. Dipko says that would help tens of thousands of displaced workers.

The state's unemployment rate stands at 8.7 percent. That's up from 5.9 percent a year ago. Nationally, the jobless rate for January fell from 10 percent to 9.7 percent.
