News » Poverty on the rise in Wisconsin

Sept. 2, 2010
About one in 10 people in Wisconsin are living in poverty.

That's the finding of a study by the Institute for Research on Poverty.

The rate was 11 percent last year, up one percent from 2008.

Jennifer Wanke of LEAVEN is the co-chair of Project Promise, a poverty coalition in the Fox Cities. She says that's a direct result of the economy.

The study found that the poverty rate in northeast Wisconsin varies between eight and 10 percent. Wanke says fortunately, there are a lot of services available in the Fox Cites.

Wanke says many people who lost their jobs are having a hard time finding a new one that pays as much as they made before. And she says the competition for those lower-paying jobs is tough.
