News » Return of students means busy school zones
Sept. 1, 2010 The neighborhoods around schools in northeast Wisconsin are going to be much busier now that the school year is starting.
Melissa Kraemer-Badtke is the coordinator of the Safe Routes to School program for the East Central Regional Planning Commission, and she tries to encourage more students to walk to class.
She says while some communities put in new sidewalks and trails, she's also working on other ways to get more kids to walk to school. Richmond elementary in Appleton has a "walking bus" program, with students meeting in specific areas to walk together.
She says they're setting up programs at various schools in the area to promote safety, by getting parents to pledge to slow down and put away their cell phones while they're driving near schools. |
