News » Popular after-school program back in Appleton

Sept. 1, 2010
The new school year is under way in Appleton, and a popular after-school program is also back.

Assistant superintendent Yvonne Dunlap says the district received about $820,000 in federal grants to once again offer services at seven schools. She says the district partners with the YMCA and the Boys and Girls Club for the 21st Century program.

Dunlap says students get to work on their homework, with tutors, and focus on areas where they may need some extra help. She says they also participate in various activities.

Dunlap says test scores show that students who participate are improving their grades and test scores. She says it also keeps children from having to be "latch-key kids."

The program is available at six elementary schools and Wilson middle school.
