News » Congress passes 'pay as you go' rule
Feb. 5, 2010 Federal lawmakers say they're trying to reign in government spending.
The same day that the House of Representatives voted to raise the nation's debt limit, members also approved a rule that requires lawmakers to show how they would pay for new proposals without increasing borrowing.
That means they would have to either raise taxes or cut something else. Appleton Congressman Steve Kagen voted for the restriction.
Kagen spoke on the floor of the House of Representatives after the rule was approved. The Appleton Democrat says it will force lawmakers to live within their means. |
