News » Literacy Coalition celebrates 20 years

Sept. 1, 2010
The Fox Valley Literacy Coalition is marking its 20th anniversary this month.

Executive director Christine Cheevers says during those years they helped countless adults achieve their goal of literacy. She says some are just learning the language, and some are adults who never learned to rea for one reason or another.

Cheevers says over the years they have collected many success stories. She says one young man was able to learn the language with the help of his tutor, and he went on to pass his citizenship test last month.

Cheevers says they always have a waiting list of adults anxious to learn the language or improve their reading skills. She says immigrants know its important to speak the language of the country they're in, and adults who never learned to read know that mastering that skill is the key to their future.

In Outagamie County alone, over 12,000 adults lack basic literacy skills.
