News » Diary writer shares his story at Appleton North

Feb. 4, 2010
Some of his anonymous journals are a part of a book from a group California teens who grew up surrounded by violence, and Manuel Scott is telling his story in Appleton.

Scott is known as one of the "Freedom Writers." They were students in a Long Beach classroom who were considered "unteachable" and "at-risk," until their teacher introduced them to stories about the Holocaust and genocide in Bosnia.

Scott and his classmates started writing journals about their experiences, and he's talking with students at Appleton North high school today. He says kids can overcome whatever happened to them in the past by working hard.

Students in the English Language Learners program at all three Appleton high schools read "The Freedom Writers Diary." Scott is talking with teens from all of the high schools today.
