News » Study shows impact of new home construction

Feb. 4, 2010
A new study shows that new home construction more than pays its way in Wisconsin.

When new homes are built, local governments have to create the infrastructure to support the homes and provide services to them.  Elliot Eisenberg is a senior economist for the National Association of Home Builders.  He says for every 1,000 new homes, those services cost local and state governments about $195 million over 15 years.

Eisenberg says the new homes generate nearly $210 million over that 15-year period, and that more than makes up for the cost.  He says existing home sales also help, but new homes tend to be more expensive and have larger lots, which leads to more tax revenue.
