News » City panel hears from public on Google Fiber idea

Mar. 9, 2010
Google wants to test a new ultra high-speed Internet service, and people in Appleton got to have their say on whether bringing it to the city is a good idea.

The city's community development committee held a public hearing on the proposal yesterday, and most were excited about the possibility of having Google Fiber. The technology provides speeds that are a thousand times faster than regular high-speed service.

Ald. Jim Clemons is the chair of the committee, and he says if Appleton decides to pursue the service, there will be plenty of competition.

Last week, the mayor of Topeka, Kansas decided to rename the city "Google, Kansas" for a month to generate attention for the city's bid.
