On-Air » Mike Kemmeter » Bio
Birthplace: Stevens Point, WI.
Education: UW-Stevens Point.
Family: My parents live in Stevens Point. My younger brother lives there too. My sister is in New York City.
What I Like About My Job: Every day is different. I never really know exactly what we'll be covering on a given day, because anything could happen. I also take our responsiblity seriously -- on a daily basis, we are reporting on stories that impact people's lives. We have to make sure we are accurate and fair.
Favorite Activities and Interests: I'm a big sports fan. I follow the Milwaukee Brewers very closely. The same goes for the Packers and Badgers basketball. I also like to hang out with my friends.
Favorite Music: I'll pretty much listen to anything. I'm almost always listening to talk radio when I'm in my car.
Favorite Movies: Major League, sports movies and comedies, and The Shawshank Redemption.
Favorite TV Shows: Curb Your Enthusiasm, Seinfeld, 24, and Lost.
Favorite Books: I read a lot of newspapers, but not a lot of books right now.
Little known fact about you: I started my career as a sportswriter and helped found a weekly newspaper in Stevens Point, The Portage County Gazette. My parents are part-owners and I worked there as the sports editor for a year and a half. I was also a part-time news reporter at a local radio station at that time, and moved to Madison to become a news reporter at a radio station there. While in Madison, I worked part-time at the Wisconsin State Journal for about a year, covering high school sports.
Favorite Moment In Radio: Covering the verdict of the Mark Chmura trial in 2001. It was the first big story that I got to cover. I still have the media pass that they issued -- it says "State vs. Chmura."
Anything else you think we should know: Over the last several years, I've spent about a week during the summer going to different ballparks around the country. I've been to every major league stadium, and I'm now just playing catch-up whenever a new one opens. It took five years to see all of the existing parks, and I finished that in 2007 with a trip to U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago and the new Busch Stadium in St. Louis. In 2008, I went to Washington D.C. to see the new Nationals Park. During my trips, I also try to see unique minor league parks if it works out. Between games, there's usually plenty of time to stop and see other things like the Space Needle in Seattle, Dealey Plaza in Dallas, and New York City. It's really a good way to see the country. |
