Pain at the pump
Feb. 20, 2012 7:48 am
Get ready 'cause here it comes.
I'll be talking about gas prices during the first hour of the PhilCast today because we're about to take a double hit at the pump.
First of all, spring is nearing, a time when the people who produce our gas have to switch to a summer blend, another way of saying they make the 'good stuff' that's more expensive for us to use.
Second of all there is the little matter of Iran, all into a tizz and pulling the plug on the Brits and the French...something about some fighting over 'alleged' nukes they're working on.
Look, the bottom line here is that this one-two punch for us could mean that the average price of a gallon around here this spring could hit $4.25, and that would be a record.
TV news today too...from SNL to the Colbert Report and more.
Talk to you at 3-ish. - Comments

Have a good weekend!

Silly Sign
Feb. 16, 2012 8:42 am
Oh come on now!
Sometimes it seems like something is so silly it can't be true. But in this case in Michigan it is.
Here is the picture to prove it.
I'll have the story on the Thursday PhilCast of course...but I wanted to post the picture to make sure you understand how truly goofy this speed limit sign is!
Also on the Thursday showgrum, big changes in the Monday Night Football booth...the jobs with the biggest and least stress...most dependable vehicles...and rowing naked across the Atlantic.
Talk to you at 3:00!

Remembering Vivi
Feb. 15, 2012 10:18 am
As you probably know by now I was, shall we say, less than thrilled with the final outcome of my beloved Westminster Dog Show last night.
If you didn't hear our real-time reaction as I recorded it you can give it a listen off my Facebook page.
Of course I'll be going over all this on the Wednesday PhilCast show.
I received an email from a long-time listener now living in Arkansas that I will also be reading. She brought up an old bit I used to do about the search for Vivi at this time of year.
Poor Vivi. Or maybe not?
Remember the speedy whippet got away from airport workers at Kennedy as she was about to leave from the dog show.
They never found Vivi.
But the entire story has brought some good however, which I will talk about on the show today as well.
Next up on my list of annual things to make a fuss over--the national spelling bee, and there is some news about that locally that we'll also be covering on the show today.
Later.

That thing won?
Feb. 14, 2012 8:54 am
I'm not happy with two of the group winners at the Westminster Dog Show after the first night of competition. We'll discuss on the Tuesday show.
I DID manage to pick one of the winners last night, which is really hard to do. For some reason the Dalmatian jumped out at me.
Three more groups to judge Tuesday night and then the best in show will be crowned.
My favorite group is the sporting group of dogs. Also tonight, the terrier group, featuring the Aussies and Cairns as well.
As it turns out Tata did very well today. You can see her being judged as I did some live commentary off the internet this morning by going to my Facebook page. Here is the link CLICK HERE
I'll be making a recording of my prediction for the overall winner live from my living room and post that on Twitter and Facebook as the winner is announced. I don't know how they can pick, but they do and it's always fun to see the champion crowned. - Comments
DOG SHOW!
Feb. 13, 2012 8:43 am
I'll be glued to the TV Monday and Tuesday nights watching the Westminster Dog Show, one of my annual traditions.
We'll chat with Julie Seaton of Muskego, Wisconsin after the 4:30 news on the Monday show. She's got one of her dogs in the big show this year.
Also coming up on the Monday show...some very interesting news about the death of Whitney Houston...my hits and misses from last night's Grammys show...and the most shocking thing about my trip to the movie theater to see "The Artist" over the weekend.

Thinking spring cycling
Feb. 10, 2012 9:39 am
It is somewhat ironic that while I am writing this blog about spring it is, for the first time in a long time, snowing outside my window. Granted, it's not much snow but any snow this winter seems to make news.
But because I'm already looking forward to warmer days in spring I am going to make a PhilCast announcement here first today, so readers of this blog are the first to get the scoop.
Anyone who knows me knows of my passion for local radio and the connection between listeners, radio personalities and the businesses who support both in the community.
I like to buy local and support local.
That's why I am excited to announce today that we are adding a new advertiser to the PhilCast Family soon, one that features something near and dear to my heart...and the rest of my body...CYCLING!
Next month you'll be hearing me talk about 'Recyclist Bicycle Company' just up the road from the radio station in Kaukauna as they begin an advertising campaign with us.
After meeting with the owner Randy I knew we'd be a perfect match. Not only is Recyclist a great shop but he has also just expanded with 'Gear 'N Up' in Neenah.
You'll be hearing both live and recorded messages on the PhilCast about sales, specials and events taking place at both locations this spring.
In addition, the PhilCast podcasts will now also be sponsored by Recyclist. So all of you listening on your own time via the podcast can thank them for helping make that an option for you.
But this partnership goes beyond just the ads you'll hear. I'll be able to demo bikes and accessories so I can give you first-hand recommendations.
And we're already talking about a Tour de PhilCast listener ride based out of the shop this summer so we can all get together and have a great time. Stay tuned for details on that.
In the meantime, here are the links to the websites for both shops. Please support those who support the show by stopping by, either in person or on-line. It's never too early in the season to start thinking about riding your bike!

The clock is ticking, and soon me and my baby hit the the road once again. Come on along and join us!

No greeting for you!
Feb. 9, 2012 7:56 am
Hey what happened to the greeters?
One of the things I'll be talking about on today's PhilCast is the decision by Wal-Mart to dump the greeters.
Now I'm not really much of a Wal-Mart shopper, and I know it's easy to make fun of all the old people standing there saying 'hi' and offering you a cart.
But still, the store was kinda known for that. Seems a shame to dump that tradition.
And while they say these people will NOT be fired, will they actually be able to do other things in the stores?
We'll discuss.
Glitter-bombing, caffeine inhaling and Lips LaBelle's weekly visit all on tap today.
Later...
