A state lawmaker won a tight race in the Republican primary for the 1st Senate District.
Rep. Andre Jacque defeated businessman Alex Renard by about 330 votes out of just over 8,400 cast in Tuesday’s special election.
The 1st Senate District covers parts of northeast Wisconsin. Former Sen. Frank Lasee of De Pere resigned several months ago to take a job in Governor Walker’s administration.
Jacque is serving his fourth term in the Assembly. Renard is the operations manager for Renco Machine in Green Bay. Both are from De Pere.
A number of top Republican state lawmakers endorsed Renard in the primary.
Jacque will now face Democrat Caleb Frostman of Sturgeon Bay in a special election on June 12.
Governor Walker called for the special election after an order from a Dane County judge. A group led by former Attorney General Eric Holder filed a lawsuit when Walker planned to keep the seat open until the fall election.
