Menasha police say a 29-year-old man wanted in the death of an 18-month-old boy, after an apartment fire, is now in custody.
They say Vernon Williams turned himself in on a child neglect charge, at the Winnebago County jail this morning.
Police say Williams was drunk, and he fell asleep on a couch, while he was supposed to be watching children at a home on 1st Street. They say two of the kids started a fire with a lighter, and they got out safely.
After Williams escaped, police say he realized the toddler was still inside.
Firefighters rescued the child, and he died several days later at Children’s Hospital in the Milwaukee area.
