A Kaukauna man is facing a battery charge following a man’s death in Oshkosh.
Thirty-four-year-old Christopher Barry is accused of punching 47-year-old Steven Mallas in the face outside of a bar on the east side of Oshkosh. Mallas died several days later at a friend’s house.
Prosecutors say pending toxicology tests, an autopsy showed the death stemmed from a broken jaw. They say he had pneumonia and an infection after his jaw was wired shut.
Prosecutors say a woman at Boots Saloon told investigators she believed Mallas stole 18 dollars from the bar and it belonged to the bar owner’s brother. They say Barry hit Mallas after Mallas left. Barry is charged with aggravated battery and his bond was set at $50,000 in Winnebago County court yesterday.
