A 21-year-old driver accused of killing three Girl Scouts and a mother in western Wisconsin is in custody on a $250,000 bond on homicide charges.
Colten Treu was in Chippewa County court this morning. Police say Treu was “huffing,” or inhaling chemical vapors, before the crash on Saturday morning in Lake Hallie, north of Eau Claire.
Nine-year-old Jayna Kelley and 10-year-old Autum Helgeson of Lake Hallie were killed, along with 10-year-old Haylee Hickle from the Town of Lafayette. Hickle’s mother, 32-year-old Sara Jo Schneider, also lost her life.
They were picking up trash in the ditches of a highway when they were hit.
A fourth girl was hurt.
