The Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region received an unusual gift, a fully operational cheese factory in New London.
Curt Detjen is the president and CEO of the nonprofit. He says the $8 million endowment comes from Marilynn Taylor, the owner of Wohlt Creamery. She passed away last year.
Detjen says they relied on business and legal experts in the community to sell the Wohlt Creamery and some other assets and buildings. He says the new owner is keeping the business open, and even hiring more workers to grow the plant.
He says Taylor specified some of the proceeds will go to Lawrence University to support student scholarships. There will be a priority toward students from New London, Fremont, and Weyauwega. She also wants a portion to support community projects in those areas.
