A state agency is ordering the Village of Winneconne to stop replacing water meters because the village didn’t get permission for the project four years ago.
Village Administrator Mitchell Foster says they received a cease and desist letter from the Public Service Commission earlier this week.
He says the agency changed state rules not long before the village started switching the meters. Foster says Winneconne and a number of other communities didn’t realize it. He says now they’re trying to make sure they do everything by the book.
Foster says they plan to file paperwork with the agency in the coming weeks, and they hope to be able to resume the replacement program next year. He says they’ve replaced almost half the meters in the village, so far.
He says many of the old meters were failing, and they weren’t registering all low-flow use. Foster says that covers most everyday use, except for things like lawn sprinklers.
