Democrats in the Legislature are laying out their first priorities.
Assembly Minority Leader Gordon Hintz of Oshkosh says they include a proposed constitutional amendment on lame-duck sessions. He says it’s in response to moves by Majority Republicans last year to strip some power from the incoming governor and attorney general.
Hintz says if the Legislature needed to act to address emergencies they’d be able to do that. He says it’s important to make it so that in the future, a Legislature couldn’t undermine future executive power. He says that flies in the face of what the rules of democracy are.
Hintz says they also want to create a constitutional amendment to protect the state’s open records laws. The other priorities include creating a non-partisan redistricting process and changing campaign financing rules.
