Three people escaped from a house fire near downtown Appleton last night, and firefighters rescued two pets.
Battalion Chief Ethan Kroll says they went to a two-story house in the 200 block of N. Locust Street around 10 p.m., and smoke and flames were coming from both levels.
Kroll says they found a dog and a cat on the second floor. He says the dog wasn’t breathing, and they used a pet oxygen mask to treat the animal for smoke inhalation. He didn’t have an update on the dog’s condition. He says the cat was breathing on its own.
Crews are investigating the cause, and a damage estimate isn’t available yet. None of the smoke alarms in the house were working.
The three adults found somewhere else to stay last night.
