A U.S. Army veteran from De Pere was a part of the first group of blind veterans to kayak down the Grand Canyon.
Steve Baskis talked about his trip at the Northeast Wisconsin Paddlers Annual Meeting over the weekend. He says it required a lot of teamwork, and connects him to his service in the military.
Baskis lost his sight to an explosive device that also killed one of his fellow soldiers about 10 years ago. He says he’s always been an adventurous person and used kayaking to help rebuild his life after the tragic event.
