A developer wants to turn most of the Gabriel Furniture building in downtown Appleton into apartments.
Commercial Horizons plans to restore the historic three-story building, at the corner of College Avenue and Morrison Street. Two smaller, separate buildings also make up the Gabriel Furniture storefront. They would be torn down, and replaced with a three-story building.
Appleton Community Development Director Karen Harkness says it would be known as Gabriel Lofts. She says the project would fit the city’s goal of bringing more housing to the downtown.
The project would have 21 apartments. There would be businesses on the first floor.
The city is offering TIF money, and the amount would depend on the final value of the project. Harkness says the developer’s budget is $5.4 million.
The Gabriel Furniture building dates back to the 1850s, and the store opened in 1928.
