Governor Evers says his proposed budget will include a provision to eliminate what’s called the “dark store loophole.”
Big-box retailers are using the loophole to argue their properties should be assessed the same way as closed stores. That’s reducing their property taxes, and shifting more of the burden to homeowners and small businesses.
Several counties in northeast Wisconsin, and around the state, held an advisory referendum on the loophole last November. A majority wanted the state to close the loophole.
