A Democratic leader from Oshkosh is on board with Governor Evers trying to close what’s called the “dark store loophole.”
Evers announced yesterday he’ll put a provision in his proposed budget to do that. It would block big-box retailers from arguing their property tax assessments should be the same as a closed store.
Assembly Minority Leader Gordon Hintz believes they need to act quickly. He says the loophole is shifting the property tax burden to homeowners and small businesses.
There were advisory referendum questions on the issue in Outagamie, Winnebago, and Brown counties last November. Three out of four voters wanted to close the loophole.
