Appleton could change part of its policy for replacing sidewalks.
Public Works Director Paula Vandehey says the city would continue to cover the cost if there are big cracks, broken corners, or another type of trip hazard. But she says they wouldn’t replace any squares that settle anymore.
Vandehey believes they’re falling behind. She says they’ve had the same amount budgeted for the past 15-to-20 years and it’s not going as far as it used to for the city’s 400 miles of sidewalks.
Vandehey says if homeowners want to replace sunken blocks of sidewalk they’d have to pay for it themselves.
The city’s municipal services committee will talk about the proposal in the coming weeks.
