A top Republican is weighing in on a proposal from Governor Evers to legalize medical marijuana.
The Democrat also wants to decriminalize having small amounts of pot.
Assembly Majority Leader Jim Steineke is from Vandenbroek. He says decriminalization isn’t something the governor ran on so it’s somewhat of a surprise. He says they haven’t seen anything about how Evers plans to approach the issue, so it’s hard to say where they stand on it.
Steineke says a number of Assembly Republicans support legalizing medical marijuana. Assembly Speaker Robin Vos believes decriminalization provides a pathway to full legalization and he opposes that. Republican Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald has said in the past he doesn’t support medical marijuana.
