Republican lawmakers argue a study bolsters their position against the state accepting the federal Medicaid expansion.
The conservative law firm Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty co-wrote the report, along with the Center for Research on the Wisconsin Economy at UW-Madison. It shows the expansion would shift costs to people on private insurance, totaling $600 million a year.
Republican Sen. Duey Stroebel of Saukville says the expansion would ultimately add more people to government-run insurance. He believes that could get the country closer to a single-payer system and socialized medicine.
Governor Evers plans to include the expansion in his state budget. Majority Republicans in the Legislature have long opposed it.
