School districts around the state could see a substantial increase in funding for special education in Governor Evers’ proposed budget.
A special commission on school funding recommends boosting state spending to 30 percent of costs next year and 60 percent in 2021.
Oshkosh Superintendent Vickie Cartwright says right now districts are footing a bigger part of the bill. She says the cost is significant. She says the funds they get from the state and federal governments aren’t enough to cover the true cost of the services.
Governor Evers is seeking nearly $970 million for special education in his next budget. That’s an increase of 163 percent.
